Why your strategic plan is not reaching your team

A strategy becomes useful when teams and individuals can connect it to their own decisions and actions.

Start with the strategic choice

Clarify the direction before adding detail. A list of projects is not enough: owners and leaders need to understand which outcomes matter and why.

Build the planning cascade

Use an annual operating plan to connect strategic priorities with measures and major initiatives. Select the next 90-day priorities. Break these into monthly commitments and weekly actions.

Make team ownership visible

Agree what each team contributes. Then identify individual actions, owners and dates. A priority with no clear owner will struggle to compete with daily demands.

Review outcomes as well as activity

Ask whether the work is producing the intended result. Use progress reviews to identify obstacles and adjust the plan, rather than simply reporting completed tasks.

Connect the leadership work

Owners may need to delegate differently or change the way decisions are made. Cascaded planning works best when the people leading it also develop their capability.
